A collie convention, an air show and Jazz on the River: 5 things to do in metro Detroit

The first weekend of August in metro Detroit offers a gathering of collies and canine enthusiasts in Belleville; aviation spectacles in Oakland County; a collection of classic cars on display in Troy; a chance to sway to soulful Jazz along the Detroit River, and an art fair on Belle Isle.

Here are five things to do for the weekend of Aug. 4-6:

Collie Day in the Park

All breeds are welcome to this 33rd annual event hosted by the Greater Brighton Collie Club and Tri-County Collie Rescue. There will be games, food, merchandise for sale, a silent auction and an American Kennel Club-sanctioned puppy match.

Owners can have their dogs evaluated for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, and dogs who perform various tricks can get tested for the AKC Trick Dog certificate. Each test costs $10.

Bring a leash, water bowl, dog food, treats and something to sit on.

All proceeds will fund the veterinary care and fostering of TCCR collies and older collies in hospice.

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Lower Huron Metro Park, Tulip Tree Shelter, 40151 E. Huron River Drive in Belleville.

Oakland County International Airport Open House & Airshow

Aviation entertainment, exhibits and up-close looks at planes and helicopters are part of this Waterford attraction. There will be aerobatic teams, freefall parachute demonstrations, World War II aircraft, a variety of military, commercial and civilian aircrafts, vehicles on display, a play area for kids and more.
