An ex comes back into her life and threatens to ruin everything she and her husband have built. Since the announcement of Lively playing Lily and Justin Baldoni who will play the threat, Ryle, fans have been calling out Hoover for the unrealistic age difference in the characters.

Lively is 35 well over a decade older than the 23-year-old character she is playing. Baldoni is nine years older than the 30-year-old book character he is playing.

“Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular,” she shared at the festival “You were writing college-age characters. That's what I was contracted to do.” She admitted, “I didn't know that neurosurgeons went to school for 50 years. There's not a 20-something neurosurgeon.”

She is using the film to correct her wrongs. “As I started making this movie, I'm like, ‘We need to age them out because I messed up,’” she admits. "So that's my fault." And while Lively’s age is off, Hoover says she is “extremely happy” with the cast.

Hoover also admits that she is a fan of Lively has been “obsessed” with her since she was Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl.

The author hasn’t allowed herself to get too excited about the Lively being apart of the cast it’s still a pinch me moment. “It's not done filming anything could go wrong.”

Hoover has also had to defend the clothing choices that fans have spotted while the stars film the movie. She “loves” the costumes she admits. And insists that fans are jumping to conclusions. "You've seen a couple of outfits that are completely out of context. I'm not worried about it.”

She also insists that the outfits were not a huge part of her book and the fans shouldn’t be that upset.

“I don't remember describing outfits at all. I don't care what they have on. In my head, it's about the conversation they're having and the story.”

Colleen Hoover Is Happy

So far, the author is impressed with what she has seen. “I got to see the footage they filmed thus far. I'm not a crier. I know that I write emotional books but I'm not an emotional person. And I cried so much on set.”

Hoover continued, “You guys are going to be so happy. I'm extremely happy and now my expectations are up and I'm going to keep them there.”

Hopefully, fans will be satisfied with the final product! It’s always hard adapting a book into a film especially one that has such a huge following.
