Warning: This post contains spoilers for Friday’s episode of Sugar.

At first glance, Apple TV+’s Sugar, starring Colin Farrell as a L.A. private eye, looked like a typical crime drama. But this week, we learned to our amazement: It’s a lot more than that!

In Friday’s Episode 6, private eye John Sugar’s pursuit of missing girl Olivia led him to the front door of coldblooded crime boss Byron Stallings, with Sugar easily turning Stallings’ vicious attack dogs into gentle pups with his soothing voice. Inside the house, Sugar walked right into a trap, and Stallings and his henchman Manny took turns beating him up. But Sugar was undeterred, warning them to turn over Olivia, “or I will kill you all.” Manny pointed a gun at Sugar’s head and pulled the trigger — but then Sugar slapped the bullet out of the way! Huh?!?

Sugar wrestled the gun away and shot Stallings’ wife and Manny dead… but not before the wife plunged a very large knife into Sugar’s abdomen. He knew Stallings was tipped off about him, and when he checked Stallings’ phone, he saw his handler Ruby’s number come up. (Uh-oh.) When Stallings refused to tell him where Olivia is, Sugar shot him dead. He drove himself home, still bleeding badly from the knife wound and muttering: “Not everything’s like a movie. I know that.” How is he still alive, though?

He met Melanie at a motel room, asking her to get a sewing kit to patch him up and refusing an ambulance: “I’ll be fine.” She said she can’t do it, so they called his friend Henry, who we met a few episodes back at the polyglot party. Henry didn’t seem fazed by Sugar’s dire condition, sending Melanie out to the pharmacy and then injecting Sugar with something that put him right to sleep. He told Melanie to keep him in the room and explained why he can’t go to the hospital: “It’s not safe for him.” Hmmm…

Later that night, Sugar woke up and drove over to Ruby’s, telling her that Stallings knew he was coming. He wanted to know why she tipped off Stallings, but she couldn’t tell him the truth: “You have to stop looking for her. I’m allowed to tell you that much.” She insisted that this is all “for the greater good” and “for the mission.” Sugar soon hightailed it out of there, feeling the sting of Ruby’s betrayal: “Not the first time my heart’s been broken.” But what mission was she talking about?

Sugar knew he got too close to the Olivia case, but he didn’t care: “Let them come after me. I’m not stopping.” First, though, he wanted to take a short break and “go home.” So back in the motel room, he took out a kit and loaded up a special syringe, jabbing it into his neck. First, his eyes turned blue… and then his skin turned blue! WTF? So John Sugar… is an alien?!?

Looking back, it almost makes sense: He’s always seemed superhuman and not quite a part of this world, like a visitor from a different era. (Or a different planet.) So did he learn how to be human by watching old movies, and that’s why he’s so obsessed with them? And would that explain his ability to speak many languages, his incredible fighting skills, his limitless wealth, his saint-like kindness, his instant rapport with animals? It’s a truly wild twist to throw at us three-quarters of the way through the season — but we also can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
