Colin Farrell Returns as The Penguin in Eerie First Look at “The Batman” Villain's Spinoff — Watch!

The series inspired by Matt Reeves' 2022 film 'The Batman' is set to premiere on Max this fall

One of Gotham's most ruthless villains is getting his time to shine.

On Friday, Max released the debut teaser trailer for the upcoming series The Penguin, which sees Colin Farrell reprise his role as the titular Gotham City villain from the 2022 film The Batman. The clip not only reveals that the show, executive produced by The Batman director Matt Reeves, is set to premiere this fall but it promises to be a thrilling gangster story.

Farrell, 47, appears in the clip and is completely unrecognizable as he resumes his portrayal as the violent mobster whose face has been scarred and has a bird-like widow's peak.

The teaser sees the villain, who famously takes on Batman in the DC comics, reflecting on a crime boss who came up in his neighborhood and how he'd like to leave behind a similar legacy.

"When I was a kid, there was a gangster, a real old school type: Rex Calabrese," the character whose real name is Oz Cobb says while speaking to someone off screen. "He was a big deal. He helped people. If he saw you on the street, he'd call out to you. When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holdin' a cigar."

As shots of The Penguin looking over Gotham and committing crimes plays, he continues, "In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor. A friggin' parade. And it wasn't fancy, but it was the gesture. The show of love of what he meant. Can you imagine to be remembered like that?"

With an eerie tone and ample footage of Bruce Wayne's enemy committing arson and attacking his enemies, it appears as though fans are in for a dark series exploring The Penguin's criminal underworld and rise to power.

The teaser also offers a brief first-look at some of Farrell's costars, including Cristin Milioti and Rhenzy Feliz. The three star alongside Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown and Michael Zegen.

According to a press release, the eight-episode series is set to debut this fall and "continues The Batman epic crime saga that filmmaker Matt Reeves began with Warner Bros. Pictures’ global blockbuster The Batman."

The show was ordered straight to series in March 2022, almost immediately after the Robert Pattinson-led take on the superhero was released in theaters.

The film was a box office success, earning $128 million in the U.S. during its debut weekend. At the time, it was among the biggest films opening following the COVID-19 lockdown, being second only to 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Although details are slim about the forthcoming spinoff, the Oscar-nominated actor opened up about being excited to revisit his character from The Batman in a January 2023 interview with Variety.

“The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to,” Farrell said of his time filming the 2022 movie. “Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.”

“Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino’s work. I just knew there was so much to do with it — age it up, age it down,” the Banshees of Inisherin star continued. “He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.”

The Penguin isn't the only project following Reeves' Bruce Wayne film. The director, 57, has since confirmed that a sequel is in the works, with Pattinson, 37, set to star again.
