Colin Farrell Is a Deliciously Secretive Detective in First Trailer for “Sugar”

The Irish actor stars as private investigator John Sugar in the new Apple TV+ series

Colin Farrell is on the job and nobody’s gonna hold this detective back.

In Sugar, the 47-year-old Irish actor plays John Sugar, a private investigator who finds himself entangled in a decades-old web of lies after setting his sights on the granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer.

The first trailer for the new Apple TV+ series, which premieres its first two episodes on April 5, opens with Sugar looking like any good Mad Men-esque character while riding through sunny, palm tree-lined streets in Los Angeles with a dog in the passenger seat of his Corvette convertible.

"Out here, I’m one of the good guys,” he says in a voiceover before the true — and bloody — nature of his gig is shown. “But good and bad can be in the eye of the beholder.”

As Sugar finds business with Tinseltown bigwig Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), who charges him with targeting his missing granddaughter Olivia (Sydney Chandler), the P.I. gets caught up in something far more complicated than a missing persons case.

“Sugar, I don’t like this case for you,” Ruby (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) tells him before he launches himself into the investigation — which comes with quite a few gun fights and, seemingly, a bit of a panic attack for the protagonist.

“Not now,” Sugar says as he begins to collapse in one scene, his ears ringing as he hunches over himself. “I can’t stop. She’s out there — somewhere.”

He enlists Mackenzie Mackintosh (Amy Ryan) along the way, telling her, “I need your help,” as he finds himself unearthing some “Siegel family secrets,” both recent and “long-buried,” per the show's logline, and the list of his enemies seems to grow with every passing minute.

“This is someone I wasn’t supposed to find,” Sugar says after discovering what seems to be a human body in a bag in the trunk of a car. Later, he finds himself being followed as he drives through the city.

“You’re wasting your time and my father’s money,” Jonathan’s son, Bernie (Dennis Boutsikaris) tells him, too, adding yet another name to the growing list of possible suspects in Sugar’s search.

The investigator eventually finds out that the web he’s unraveling has its ties in his own line of work, too, as he says to Kirby, “There’s someone you’re protecting.”

“They need you to stop looking,” Kirby says, to which Sugar replies, skeptically, “Who’s ‘they’?”

As the trailer concludes, flashing a myriad of scenes from the show — including a final shot that sees Sugar on his knees with his hands up as he faces down a gun — he muses, “Someone once said, ‘Tip the world on its side and everything loose lands in Los Angeles.’ After all this time, is this place starting to turn me upside down?”

The eight-episode Apple TV+ series premieres with the first two episodes dropping on April 5; new episodes will then air weekly on Fridays for the following six weeks.

Sugar also stars Anna Gunn, Nate Corddry and Alex Hernandez, and is described as  a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story.”
