Colgate kicker Chris Puzzi lays massive hit in first game of the college season

Welcome to college football Saturday, where even in Week 0 the big hits are back.

The weekend kicked off with Villanova and Colgate, which was not particularly notable since it was a 34-14 blowout, but one play in particular sticks out above the rest.

Following Colgate’s first score in the third quarter, senior kicker Chris Ruzzi booted the ball down inside the 5-yard line, where returner Dez Boykin fielded the ball. He found a big hole and evaded a diving tackler before being absolutely leveled by Ruzzi.

Keeping his shoulders low, Ruzzi turned Boykin horizontal as he pushed him out of bounds.

Similar to the Fat Guy Touchdowns, the Kicker Tackle is one of the many joys of football. It’s not too often that a return man gets far enough for the kicker to make a difference, and often they’re just left just looking silly.

Now Ruzzi can join the pantheon of great tackling college kickers. Remember Vanderbilt’s Carey Spear leveling Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson in 2012? How about Penn State’s Joey Julius taking down Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis in 2016?

The NFL has its fair share of well-trained kickers, although they can tend to get more closely scrutinized. Atlanta Falcons punter Matt Bosher received a “random” drug test after laying a massive hit last season, and Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee found the same thing after a major hit on Trindon Holliday in 2013.
