In a clip from his interview with Full Send Podcast, Bennett touched on working with Juice in the early stages of the late rapper’s career, saying that he first learned of Juice through Lil Bibby.
“Bibby called me and he’s like, I have this artist I want you to manage,” Bennett said. “I said, ‘Manage? I don’t manage artists,’ … and he sent me Juice’s music. This was before anyone who knew who Juice was and the first songs he sent me were ‘All Girls Are the Same’ and ‘Lucid Dreams.’”
Bennett said he remembered he was in his hotel room in New York when he first heard the songs, describing them as “incredible.” He continued, “I called [Bibby] back and I was like, ‘I’m not really interested in managing anyone but I would love to do his first music video.’”
Bennett said, “To give you a gauge of [Juice’s social media] engagement … he probably had like 2,000 followers. So when I got back to Chicago, he came over … and we just hung out. We took some shrooms, we listened to some music and then the rest was history. I think we shot ‘All Girls Are the Same’ two weeks later and then maybe ‘Lucid Dreams’ a month or two after that.
Bennett also had a previously unshared story about working with Ye on YNW Melly’s music video for 2019’s “Mixed Personalities.”
“Kanye hits me the night before it drops and he’s like, ‘Yo let’s make the video black and white.’ I told him no,” Bennett said. “I didn’t say it just like that, I said, ‘We have to kind of think about Melly here. This is his song at the end of the day, this is his vision. He’s also not here to have an input on it. So I think we really need to follow the initial vision we all had.’”
He’s like, ‘That doesn’t match my color palette.’ He was on set the whole time … But what do you expect [when] working with someone like Kanye? I actually really appreciated it because like I said, that self integrity element of knowing what he likes and what’s true to his artistry.”
