Coldplay Frontman Writes Lyrics for ‘Late Show’ Theme Song

Coldplay was the musical guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and the band finished the show with a performance of “Hymn for the Weekend,” off the new album A Head Full of Dreams. At the beginning of the show, the frontman, Chris Martin, sat down with Colbert and offered to help him with the show’s theme song. Colbert was concerned that Martin didn’t like the song, but the singer assured him that the music was great and he just thought it could use some words.

Martin had already written down some lyrics he thought would be good and sang them for the host to see what he thought. Colbert helped start the song with a quick drumroll, and Martin started singing the new lyrics, “Shu-bee doot doot doot doot doot doot shu-bee du doot,” which were basically just sounds he made to replace the horns in the song. Colbert seemed understandably confused at first, but once he took a shot at singing the “lyrics” himself, he thought they were “genius.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
