Tensions are heightening across party lines going into next week’s midterm elections, as most recently seen in the Republican Party’s encouragement of armed and masked “monitors” at ballot boxes across the country. While “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert had plenty to say about those developments, he thought it best on Wednesday to lighten the mood with a winking musical parody of Mary Poppins. “Dumb little idiots, dumb little lie,” indeed.

“Of course, a lot of these knuckleheads are motivated by online misinformation about voting, and it’s getting worse,” Colbert began. “On Twitter, lies about voting machines have been a top midterm narrative, including falsely claiming that voting machines were connected to the internet – and where’d they learn that? The internet.”

“But everyone knows you can’t trust the internet,” Colbert continued on the riff. “I read about it on: DontTrustTheInternet.net! Check it out.”

The host then zeroed in on one instance in particular that had him riled up, and it involved a popular Twitter user who is clearly a foreign bot, sporting the username Ultra MAGA BELLA Hot Babe.

“As is tradition, there’s a lot of information being put out by foreign accounts, like one based in China that Tweeted a photo of someone holding paper near a purported dropbox, claiming they were paid by the DNC. This account had 26,000 followers, and it’s name? Ultra MAGA BELLA Hot Babe.”

“Of course it had so many followers, the name is so catchy!” Colbert insisted, before cheekily breaking into song to the tune of Mary Poppins’ own “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

(“Dumb little idiots, dumb little lie!/Dumb little idiots, dumb little lie!”)

It was a pretty show-stopping performance, to say the least.
