Colbert mocks Trump's awkward water bottle moment: 'That is hard to watch'

Colbert takes on Matt Lauer by making Trump jokes

After returning from a 12-day trip to Asia, President Trump gave a televised speech Wednesday to extol his accomplishments abroad — only to be overshadowed by an awkward sip of water.

As Stephen Colbert quipped on The Late Show, “It turns out, it wasn’t just attention he was thirsty for.”

Colbert went on to play a clip of the viral moment when the parched POTUS paused mid-speech, searched for water, came up empty-handed, was directed to a nearby supply of water bottles, and finally took an ungainly two-handed sip.

Setting up his next punchline, Colbert said, “All right, that’s not fair. Everybody gets dry mouth. I can’t stand here on national television and make fun of a politician just for drinking water. That is childish — and Trump already did it way better with Rubio.”

Trump, of course, has famously mocked Florida Senator Marco Rubio for sipping water during a State of the Union response in 2013, calling Rubio a “total choke artist” and the incident “unbelievable.”

“Unbelievable,” Colbert repeated, “that you are the president.”
