Colbert Serves Bernie Sandwiches on 'Late Show'

On Wednesday night’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host tried to grapple with the semi-surprise wins of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in New Hampshire. He concluded it may have come down to, in Sanders’ case, to sandwiches.

Of these two triumphant “outsiders,” Colbert said, quoting the immortal Woody Allen, “the heart wants what the hearts wants.” In this case, “a couple of bad-boys, from the wrong side of the polls… they’re so dangerous, you want to surrender your body politic and let them do what they will.”

When it came to Sanders, Colbert picked up on a gaffe made by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, who on primary night mangled the Democratic candidate’s name as “Bernie Sandwiches.” Colbert suggested this verbal slip was actually key. Bringing plates of bread and meat to illustrate what he meant, Colbert said things like, “He’s not a part of the rich boys’ club” (a club sandwich was produced, to happy groans from the audience); “he has a long history of supporting the LGBT community” (a BLT was shown), “he’s been Reuben the establishment the wrong way” (do I need to say he held up a Reuben sandwich?). Finally, “I know it may sound hoagie” (you got it) but “his supporters need we need a hero.” Make sure you hang in there for a delightfully awful pun he made about a roast beef au jus sandwich.

When Colbert actually brought out his guest, they ran through the usual Sanders platform, with Colbert invoking his guest from a night previous, Bill O’Reilly, and the Fox News host’s arguments about the impossibility of a Sanders Presidency.

Sanders said that O’Reilly has announced he’ll “move to Ireland” if the Democratic socialist is elected. This reason to vote for him, Sanders noted, amounts to “a twofer.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
