Coi Leray explained the details behind her split from Republic Records on social media. While speaking to fans on Instagram, the 26-year-old shared that she and the label did not see eye-to-eye on the type of music she wanted to create.

“When I dropped Blue Moon, Republic, they wanted pop sh*t. They wanted some Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande sh*t,” discussed the Grammy-nominated performer. “Which I can do, but I still like to work at my own pace and on my own time, and I’m still developing and learning my own sound and sh*t.”

She continued to discuss how things shifted to her self-funding her career.

“The Blue Moon sh*t, they ain’t like… I wouldn’t say that they didn’t like it, but it was something that they didn’t wanna put no money into,” detailed the “Self Love” singer.

“So when I gotta come out my pocket and put my own money into my own music, you gotta make real-life decisions. Not everyone supports every single Coi in the pond, if that makes sense. My versatility— sometimes I’m rapping, singing, baby voice, deep voice, and different boats, different floats. Not everybody likes certain things so I get it.”

Blue Moon was released in August 2023 via Uptown Records, a division of Republic Records and UMG Recordings, Inc. Per Billboard, she signed to the label in 2019. Her departure from Republic came in January 2024 with the release of the single “Wanna Come Thru.”

“As you get older and you tap into your womanhood and your femininity and I feel like you should embrace that. It’s feeling good for yourself; looking in the mirror and just loving yourself,” relayed the chart-topper. “2024 is going to be my grown and sexy era. I’m taking over this year. I’ve got so much new music and a whole new side of me to get to know.”
