Yes, it's true, Coco Jones is officially the best new artist of 2023!
Coco rose to fame at age 13 playing pop star Roxie on Disney Channel's hit original movie Let It Shine, which led her to sign a deal with Hollywood Records. In 2014, she was dropped from her label and decided to take a break from the industry.
Coco found her way back into the spotlight in 2022, when she landed a lead role on Peacock's original show Bel-Air, playing Hilary Banks, and dropped her debut EP, What I Didn't Tell You.
The 25-year-old R&B singer was in tears as she accepted the award for Best New Artist at the 2023 BET Awards.

According to Billboard, Coco is the "first female R&B singer to win in this category since SZA five years ago."
"Thank you so much, BET!" the singer exclaimed. "My momma and my family are right over there..."
She continued, "I remember when I did106 & Park with y'all. I was 16 in those tight little gray, skinny jeans and my sneakers. ... Thank you so much to my culture, who has stood beside me ... we were raised together ... it's been a long journey."
Coco added, "I just want to thank God so much for keeping me when I didn't understand. And for all of my Black girls, we do have to fight a little harder to get what we deserve, but don't stop fighting. Even when it doesn't make sense and you're not sure ... keep pushing ... And I'mma continue to give y'all my everything."
Coco's fans happily celebrated her big win and live performance of her No. 1 Billboard hit "ICU":

And another from hip-hop legend Diddy:
Coco's emotional speech stems from a decadelong career of fighting to be recognized in the entertainment industry. In 2021, she made a viral YouTube video detailing her struggles being a Disney kid and working in the entertainment industry as a Black woman. "I would cry ... the colorism out here is crazy ... Look at your favorite shows; do you see anyone dark skin? No," Coco told fans.
It's time to give Coco Jones her flowers and add her to the list of former Disney Channel girls who are dominating! Congratulations, Coco — so well deserved!
