Coco Jones was truly a standout at the 2023 Soul Train Awards.

Moments after being minted this year’s Best New Artist, the Bel-Air star took the stage to perform her single “Double Back.” The London on da Track-produced ballad from her Grammy-nominated debut EP, What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe), samples SWV’s classic hit, “Rain.”

As the wind attempting to overthrow them during the outdoor performance, Jones—alongside the illustrious trio—stood firm and vocally delivered. As a double-whammy, Jones interpolated the “Double Back” chorus towards the end of their performance as Coko, Lelee, and Taj continued to sing “Rain” chorus.

When speaking with VIBE about “Double Back” and its nostalgic references, Jones explained, “I wanted to honor Black women from my upbringing who I looked up to on screen and in music.”

Compared to her Grammy-nominated chart-topper, “ICU,” the 25-year-old noted, “I wanted to show different sides of myself and what I offer the world sonically. So ‘Double Back’ was a great follow up record to demonstrate my versatility.”

Funny enough, the song may have been the lead single from the EP. In fact, “ICU” wasn’t her first choice. “I thought it aged me,” Jones told Teen Vogue. “I was like, ‘Y’all, please, I want to do choreo. I cannot dance to this.’ I wrote about one heartbreak, but I’m like, ‘Girl, I really enjoy a lot of aspects of my life. I don’t want to have to harp on that.’”
