Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam trophy on Saturday (Sept. 9), beating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. Speaking with VIBE, the tennis phenom detailed how important representation is to her historic win.

Gauff stated that, as a part of the New Balance team, she’s honored she can use her skill to show the next generation that anything is possible. She also shouted out her first signature shoe, which she donned during her storybook US Open run.

“I have been a part of the New Balance family since I was 14 years old and winning this title in NY, one year after launching my first signature shoe, ‘The Coco CG1,’ means so much to me.

“Representation is so important, and I am honored to be able to show young athletes that you should never stop pushing to achieve your dreams…I’ve always believed that age is just a number, and your dreams are there to be chased no matter how old you are. This victory means the world to me, and I hope it inspires others to chase their dreams with determination and passion.”

The Florida native was grateful to her family for supporting her tennis journey. “I could never have done this without the support of my family and my team, and I am forever grateful for partners like New Balance that feel like an extension of my family and who have been with me since I was 14 years old.”

Chris Davis, New Balance CMO, and SVP Merchandising, articulated the sneaker company’s love for their brand ambassador. Davis called her US Open win a “testament to her hard work.”

“We are honored to be a part of Coco’s incredible journey and are so proud to have her a part of the New Balance Family,” Davis said. “Our relationship with Coco started [when] she was just 14 years old, but even then, we could see what a special talent she was on the court, but also off. Her victory at the 2023 US Open is a testament to her hard work, and we look forward to supporting her throughout her long career.”

According to Wettfreunde.net, Coco Gauff became the third American teenager to win the women’s singles championship at the US Open in the Open Era. Gauff, 19, joins Tracy Austin and Serena Williams as the only teenagers to pull off the challenging feat.
