Coastal Carolina coach Joe Moglia returning for 2018 after medical absence
Coastal Carolina coach Joe Moglia will be back on the sidelines in 2018.
The school said Friday Moglia would return as the team’s head coach after missing the entire 2017 season because of a medical leave of absence. He told Yahoo Sports in July he suffered a bronchial asthmatic reaction to allergies.
“I am excited about coming back and re-joining my staff and team,” Moglia said in a team statement. “It wasn’t easy being removed from the day-to-day activities associated with running this program. However, I think we can learn a lot from the 2017 season.
“I will be meeting with the staff and team this coming week and our primary focus in the immediate future will be to wrap up recruiting before the next signing period. After that, we will focus on the 2018 season.”
The statement noted that Moglia feels good after changes to his diet and workout regime. Jamey Chadwell coached the team in 2017.
Moglia, 68, is a former CEO for TD Ameritrade. He stepped down from his post with the financial company in 2008 and started coaching football in 2009. He took the Coastal Carolina job in 2012 and has a 51-15 record with the school.
2017 was CCU’s first in the Sun Belt Conference after moving up from the FCS ranks. The Chanticleers went 3-9, though CCU ended the season on a two-game win streak.
