Michelle and Rod have 12 children, eight of whom still live at home. Baby number 13 is due in a few weeks. Michelle runs the household, pays the bills and homeschools the kids. She says the child she’s carrying will likely be born with Down Syndrome and she doesn’t know how she’s going to keep up.

“Sometimes we need to surrender to win,” says life coach and author Mike Bayer (Coach Mike), who advises Michelle to send her children to a school outside the home; but she objects. That’s when two of the couple’s older children speak up.

“Homeschool failed with me,” says 19-year-old Sunshine, adding, “I learned to read, but I’m not good at anything else.”
River, 22, says he didn’t learn how to read until he was 12, and once he got to high school, “I had to go back and learn all these steps that I should have known.”
