CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of its linear networks.

Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are part of the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. Amanpour also is part of the early afternoon schedule.

The CNN hub also features original programming, including Jim Sciutto anchor CNN Newsroom, with Rahel Solomon, Jim Acosta, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield also set to lead coverage during certain dayparts.

The streaming service, currently in open beta form, is a hub on the Max platform and available to all subscribers. It also includes about 900 hours of programming from CNN Originals, including shows like Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown and Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.

The service is being heavily marketed for its offering of live news 24/7, a contrast to the network’s ill-fated subscription service CNN+ that lasted just one month until new owners Warner Bros. Discovery pulled the plug. What distinguishes CNN Max is the scope of programming that comes from the network’s traditional cable channels, CNN and CNN International. Existing contracts with cable and satellite providers — who pay hefty subscriber fees — have limited news networks from offering a streaming simulcast of their entire feed to all but their existing linear customers. Multichannel providers have worried about cannibalizing their own audiences, but CNN Max relies on the CNN International feed. CNNi has different and presumably less restrictive agreements than the traditional network.

Still, after the failure of CNN+, CNN was the only major news network without a substantial streaming presence that could capture audiences who have cut the cord on their cable and satellite bundles. JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, has highlighted the “significantly younger” audience on Max.

Gradually, CNN rivals like MSNBC and Fox News have added some of their most popular shows on their streaming services. Earlier this year, Peacock began offering live feeds of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and CNBC’s Squawk Box.
