Clueless, The Musical will finally premiere Off-Broadway this fall

Move over, Mean Girls — another classic teen clique is officially hitting the stage.

Clueless, The Musical will premiere Off-Broadway in November as part of The New Group theater’s 2018-2019 season.

The film’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling, adapted her 1995 comedy for the stage. She spoke to EW last year, shortly after finishing the show’s book.

“That’s really been fun because I’m getting involved in a whole new world,” she said. “And, yeah, what else can I say? It’s nice to learn some new s—.”

Not unlike Clueless’ lead characters — Cher, Dionne, and Tai — three women are helming the musical. Kristin Hanggi, a Tony nominee for Rock of Ages, is tapped to direct, while two-time Tony nominee Kelly Devine will choreograph.

The announcement comes after years of speculation. Set in 1990s Beverly Hills, Clueless is a jukebox musical, reimagining ’90s hits as parodies and monologues from the love-obsessed teen characters. Casting has yet to be announced.
