Clothes Make The Characters In ‘Phantom Thread’ – The Contenders Video

When it came to making a drama thriller about a perfectionist fashion designer, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson reached out to his longtime costume designer of seven films Mark Bridges for Phantom Thread.

The film follows Daniel Day-Lewis as British couturier Reynolds Woodcock, who lives a lonely life among his staff and his caretaking sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) as he dresses 1950s London high society. While out in the country for breakfast one day, he stumbles upon a waitress, Alma, (Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps), whom he rapidly turns into his muse, his model and lover. The twist: Reynolds isn’t an easygoing guy.

Bridges, who won an Oscar for costume design for 2012’s The Artist and was nominated for his 1970s wears in Anderson’s Inherent Vice, told the SRO crowd at Deadline’s annual The Contenders event last month at the DGA Theater how he dressed the complex personalities in Phantom Thread, the Focus Features pic that opens Christmas Day.

Already, the pic counts two Golden Globe nominations for Day-Lewis as best drama actor and Jonny Greenwood’s classical score, four Critics Choice noms, and National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle screenplay wins for Anderson’s script.
