Three months after The Cleaning Lady star Adan Canto passed away, his on-screen alter ego has met the same fate.

During Tuesday’s episode of the Fox drama, Canto’s Arman Morales perished in a devastating sequence, just moments before he was to be safely returned to Nadia in exchange for a ransom.

As you’ll recall, Arman had been MIA ever since the opening moments of Season 3, when he was involved in a shootout that unfolded when a drug deal went south and was subsequently tossed in the back of a van. Since then, Thony, Nadia and Arman’s cartel-involved family members, Ramona and Jorge, have been attempting to locate Arman, and his captors at last planned to return him in Tuesday’s installment. The exchange was so near, in fact, that Nadia and Dante (Mayans MC‘s Clayton Cardenas) were already at the desert location where Arman was to be dropped off, and his return seemed just minutes away.

But earlier in the episode, Thony had received some worrying intel that indicated Dante was responsible for Arman’s capture in the first place, sending her and Fiona on a separate search for Arman that ultimately put them on a collision course — quite literally — with Arman’s captors. At the end of the hour, Thony and Fiona’s vehicle (which was helpfully driven by new handyman Jeremy, officially in way over his head) caught up with the truck transporting Arman to the desert. We even got to see Arman a few times, presumably by way of the same TV magic that allowed him to briefly pop up in the season premiere.

For a moment, the two vehicles drove side-by-side, and Arman and Thony shared a long, meaningful look. But when one of Arman’s captors aimed a gun directly at Thony, Arman intercepted, shoving the gun in another direction. A shot was fired, and the driver of Arman’s truck swerved, sending the vehicle careening off a cliff. Thony was left to watch as the truck flew, and though we never officially saw it land for ourselves, Thony’s gutted reaction when she later peered over the side of the cliff was confirmation enough. In the episode’s final moments, it flashed back to the sweet Season 1 scene in which Thony and Arman shared a slow dance and kiss in Mexico; a closing tribute card read, “In Loving Memory — Adan Canto.”

Canto tragically passed away on Jan. 8 after a battle with appendiceal cancer. Following The Cleaning Lady‘s return in March, co-showrunner Jeannine Renshaw shared that Season 3 was originally crafted as an “Arman-driven season,” but scripts were tweaked to accommodate Canto’s absence in hopes that he could return to the show after treatment concluded.

“We had it all planned to welcome him back at the end of the season,” Renshaw told TVLine at the time. “It was so sad for all of us and a very, very tragic moment, but we also felt we honored him in a really nice way. All of the crew and the other actors really got a chance to process it, and hopefully the audience will get that chance, as well.”
