Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Paramour’ to Move Out When Theater Closes for Renovations

“Paramour,” the Cirque du Soleil Broadway show that opened in the spring, will find itself looking for a new home next year when its current venue, the Lyric Theater, closes for renovations just announced by Ambassador Theater Group.

ATG, the owner of the Lyric, will shutter the theater in May 2017 for the unspecified refurbishment, according to the announcement. The news comes soon after U.K.-based theater giant ATG named a pair of new executives, Stephen Lewin and Broadway producer Kristin Caskey, to head up its North American operations. Meanwhile, ATG’s second Broadway real estate acquisition, the Hudson Theater, is in the process of being renovated to open in 2017.

“Paramour” is Cirque’s first Broadway outing. The show’s producers, led by Cirque du Soleil Theatrical CEO Scott Zeiger, have begun the search for potential new “Paramour” venues both in New York and internationally, with a production in Germany mentioned as a possibility for 2018.

“Paramour,” which began previews in April, has had its ups and downs at the Broadway box office, but tends to do particularly well in high-traffic frames — like last week, when sales topped $1 million over Thanksgiving. The production will play through April 16 at the Lyric, with the renovations at the theater set to commence the following month.
