Cindy McCain on Trump: ‘It’s been at times hard for me to listen to him about my husband’

On Friday’s CBS This Morning, co-host John Dickerson sat down with Cindy McCain for her first interview since the death of her husband, Sen. John McCain, nearly three months ago from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Maybe no one was surprised, given that Donald Trump once mocked the senator for being captured during the Vietnam War, among other insults, she spoke candidly about her feelings toward the president.

“Our families have had their differences, and I’ll leave it at that,” McCain said. “It’s been, at times, hard for me to listen to him about my husband, I’ll be honest.”

And McCain said that after the recent midterm elections, she thinks Trump is questioning himself and, hopefully, getting back to basics.

“It is very humbling to lose,” McCain said. “And I hope he learns from it. And realizes that our country needs a strong leader. Not a negative Nancy, if I can put it in such a basic term.”

She revealed the president and first lady have not reached out since her husband’s funeral. McCain said that not including the president in her husband’s services was not a rebuke against Trump, but rather a message of civility. And that is something she thinks Trump should be focused on.

“We need our president. We need a White House that’s strong, a White House that’s not sparring with each other,” McCain said. “Right now, I think things are in disarray. I would hope, through this, he does learn.”
