“After working together on five previous films, including The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk, Cillian Murphy and writer-director Christopher Nolan reunite for one of the most ambitious and epic films of the year. Murphy gives a stunning portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer as a conflicted scientist leading the Manhattan Project to produce the world’s first atomic bomb,” festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi says. “For this career-best performance, we are honored to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor, to Cillian Murphy.”

Past recipients of the award include Riz Ahmed, Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Colin Firth, Daniel Day-Lewis, Andrew Garfield, Matthew McConaughey, Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Eddie Redmayne. In the years they were honored, Bridges, Day-Lewis, McConaughey, Oldman, Penn and Redmayne won the best actor Oscar.

Murphy’s other credits include the BAFTA Award-winning series Peaky Blinders, as well as A Quiet Place Part II, 28 Days Later, In the Heart of the Sea, In Time, Anthropoid, Girl With a Pearl Earring and more.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Poor Things star Emma Stone would receive the corresponding actress award at the festival.
