Thomas Shelby will be returning for the Peaky Blinders movie.

The series' creator Steven Knight told U.K. outlet Birmingham World on Tuesday that star Cillian Murphy — who recently took home his first Oscar — will reprise his role for the upcoming film.

"He definitely is returning for it," Knight, 64, said of Murphy, 47. "We're shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England]."

He also praised Murphy's performance in Oppenheimer, telling the outlet that the Best Actor Academy Award he won earlier this month "was so deserved."

"I mean he's brilliant, and he's such a great human being and he leads the line when we're shooting and he's so levelheaded and straightforward. He deserves everything he gets," Knight said.

Set in Birmingham, England, the Peaky Blinders show followed the Shelby family, who ran a criminal enterprise that established itself as a major player in the city's illegal bootlegging and betting rackets following World War I.

The series ran for six seasons, from 2013 to 2022, and starred Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the Peaky Blinders' leader. Other cast members included Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Anya Taylor-Joy and Finn Cole.

Knight previously told Variety in 2021 that a movie was in "development." He added at the time, "It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think it’s going to be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far.”

In December 2023, the creator gave another exciting update for fans, telling Radio Times magazine of the Peaky Blinders movie, "The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year."

Meanwhile, Murphy's first Oscar came for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in the Christopher Nolan-directed Oppenheimer. The film also nabbed Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan, among other accolades.

In his acceptance speech, Murphy thanked longtime collaborator Nolan, 53, the Academy and more, admitting he was feeling "a little overwhelmed" at the honor.

"It's been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you've taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say," he continued. "Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member on Oppenheimer; you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly."

The Irish actor went on to thank his "incredible team" and family, including wife of nearly 20 years Yvonne McGuinness and their sons Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16, who were in the crowd. "I love you so much, and I'm a very proud Irish man standing here tonight," he said.
