Cillian Murphy Accepts Golden Globe for “Oppenheimer” with His Wife's Lipstick on His Nose: 'Gonna Leave It'

Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Colman Domingo, Barry Keoghan, and Andrew Scott were also in the running at the 2024 Golden Globes

Cillian Murphy has nothing but love for his wife — and he wasn't afraid to show it as he won big at the 2024 Golden Globes.

The star won best actor in a motion picture, drama, for his role in Oppenheimer. Murphy beat out Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and Andrew Scott for All of Us Strangers.

As he took the stage to accept his award, Murphy asked the crowd if he had lipstick on his nose from his wife Yvonne McGuinness after his name was announced. "First question, do I have lipstick all over my nose?" he asked. "I was gonna leave it."

He then continued, "I knew the first time I walked on a Chris Nolan set it was different. The level or rigor of the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors, I was in the hands of a visionary director, a master."

"I want to thank Chris and Emma for having complete faith in me for 20 years. One of the most beautiful things about being an actor is you can't do it on your own. And we have the most incredible ensemble cast in this movie," he went on. "They were magic and some of them are here today, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Gary Oldman. Thank you for carrying me and holding me through this movie."

"Thank you to Donna Langley and everyone at Universal for believing in this movie since the beginning. To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends, your stunning work, i salute you," Murphy concluded. "To my mom, the rest of my team, thank you so much. To my family, I'm the luckiest man and I love you."

The legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer now extends beyond the creation of atomic weaponry thanks to Murphy, 47, bringing the physicist to uncanny life in what is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

Although in the past the Irish actor has earned praise and accolades — including another Golden Globe nod, in 2006 for the film Breakfast on Pluto — Murphy’s critical acclaim has hit a peak with Oppenheimer. He shares Globe recognition this year with Christopher Nolan for both writing and directing, plus costars Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt.

Barbie led the film nominations with nine total, followed by Oppenheimer with eight and both Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven.

Murphy was up against some other standout actors this year.

Cooper’s fourth Golden Globe acting nomination is for playing Leonard Bernstein in the biopic Maestro, which chronicles the composer’s loving yet chaotic marriage with Felicia Montealegre Bernstein (played by fellow Globe nominee Carey Mulligan).

However, it’s the 49-year-old multihyphenate’s sixth Globe nod overall, as he’s also in the running for directing Maestro — like he was in 2019 for the Lady Gaga-starring A Star Is Born. Cooper also co-wrote the script with Josh Singer, and produced the film alongside Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and more.

Scorsese’s latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, recreates the real-life serial killings of members of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. Alongside fellow Globe nominees Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle and Robert De Niro as William King Hale, DiCaprio, 49, plays the gullible — yet culpable — conspirator Ernest Burkhart.

It’s the Oscar winner’s 14th acting nomination from the Golden Globes, more nods than any other performer in the running this year. He’s taken home statuettes in 2005 for The Aviator, in 2014 for The Wolf of Wall Street and in 2016 for The Revenant.

An Emmy winner for Euphoria and Film Independent Spirit Award nominee for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Zola, Domingo’s star has been on the rise for years. This is his first Golden Globe nomination.

Rustin scored two Globe nods, for Lenny Kravitz’s original song “Road to Freedom" and for Domingo’s vivid portrait of Bayard Rustin. The actor, 54, plays the civil rights pioneer who organized the unprecedented 1963 March on Washington.

Keoghan, 31, has notched his first two Globe nods back-to-back, for supporting last year’s The Banshees of Inisherin and now leading Saltburn.

There’s more than meets the eye with Saltburn’s Oliver Quick, a character the Irish star infuses with all his oddball charisma. The film from writer-director Emerald Fennell also stars Jacob Elordi, Richard E. Grant and Golden Globe nominee Rosamund Pike.

Known for playing a Golden Globe-nominated hot priest on Fleabag and a BAFTA Award-winning villain on Sherlock, Scott, 47, is now recognized for a lead role with All of Us Strangers.

As a lonely gay man processing the loss of his parents in the unlikeliest of ways, the Irish actor made the hearts of audiences, critics and awards voters alike ache. All of Us Strangers is written and directed by Andrew Haigh and costars Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell and Claire Foy.
