Ciara Reveals Why She Decided to Call It Quits with Her Ex: 'It's Almost Like Your Taste Buds Change'

The singer said becoming a mother also shifted her relationship with Future, when she was asked about their "public" and "painful" breakup during an episode of the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast

Ciara is reflecting on the moment she knew it was time to end things with an ex.

While appearing on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, the "Level Up" singer, 37, opened up about a "public" and "painful" split around the time she met her now-husband, Russell Wilson. Prior to dating Wilson, Ciara ended her relationship with Future.

When host Alex Cooper asked the superstar how she knew it was time to call things off, Ciara made an analogy about how it can physically feel to experience change.

"When you know you're supposed to make a super defined decision in your life — you know it from the head to your feet, from your feet to your head and your soul and your body. It's almost like your taste buds change," she said. "You have a taste bud for a certain kind of thing, and then the taste buds just go."

The hitmaker explained that she also started reflecting on her own choices and questioning what she was really looking for. "You kind of have to define everything about making changes in your life that are very critical," she shared.

The hip-hop star — who was previously engaged to rapper Future, with whom she welcomed a son, Future Zahir, in 2014 before breaking up that year — also spoke about how becoming a mother shifted her perspective.

"When you have a child, it's very important to me, it's no time to play around," she explained. "I am now responsible for another life, so what am I doing, how am I thinking that through?"

Realizing once she became a mother that she wanted nothing short of "joy" and "to make sure [her] cup is full," she continued asking herself what her priorities were in every relationship in her life.

"I always say, 'Don't let nobody waste your time,'" she said. "I don't care if it's friendships or relationships, business, whatever it is, don't let it waste your time. It's not worth it."

"Those are things that come to mind when there's a pivotal moment in my life and in any aspect of my life."

Ciara went on to marry NFL star Russell Wilson in July 2016, and the couple have since welcomed daughter Sienna, 6, and son Win, 3. They are currently expecting their third child together.

Earlier this week, the singer posted Instagram photos of herself with Wilson and a video of her dancing after the Denver Broncos win against the Chicago Bears. In adorable clips, Ciara kissed Wilson's cheek. She also danced and twirled in her Broncos bomber jacket.

“I love you so much. #3 💙🧡🤍,” she captioned the upload.

While Ciara and Future, 39, continue to co-parent their son together, their relationship remains complicated. The rapper appeared to take a swipe at Wilson, 34, in his July single “Turn Yo Clic Up.” In the track's second verse, he raps, “I got it out the field / F--- Russell,” appearing to reference the Denver Broncos quarterback.

Last month, Ciara addressed her co-parenting dynamic with Future during an interview with The Shade Room’s Thembi Mawema, and seemed to hint that the situation was difficult.

“What is co-parenting like for you guys?” Mawema asked, prompting Ciara to burst out laughing.

Mawema joined in on the laughter and said, “I’m dead,” as she reacted to Ciara's unexpected response to her question.
