Ash Wednesday on Feb. 14 signals the start of the Lenten season, encouraging service and sacrifice for many Christian denominations preparing for Easter. To assist in the traditional no meat sacrifice on Fridays, volunteers at area churches and community groups will be serving fish fries from Feb. 16 through March 29. Many parishes offer homemade desserts, and beyond baked or fried cod, some locations offer shrimp, potato pancakes, pierogi, mac and cheese, a salad bar, clam chowder and grilled cheese on the menu. All are invited, so bring a friend to dine-in or carryout a meal from these popular halls.
