Church auction features art, music related to Lent, grief

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An auction at Trinity United Methodist Church Sunday will feature will feature Lafayette area artists and musicians focusing on the aspects of Lent.

TUMC will host the charity art auction and Lenten concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Trinity's Sanctuary, at the corner of North & 6th streets in downtown Lafayette.

According to a release from TUMC, the concert will feature artists and musicians with local ties to Lafayette. The theme for the event is "Lent: A Journey from Grief to Meaning."

This theme will explore Lent through the five stages of grief as described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a Swiss-American psychiatrist, in her 1969 book "On Death and Dying."

“I'm so excited to be able to share the wonderful art created by some very talented artists that is inspired by the five stages of grief,” Dr. Dan Peo, director of music & worship arts said in the release. “Grief is a uniquely universal human experience, and this event will allow visitors to experience it in representations of both visual art, music, and conversation.”

The artists participating in the art auction will be contributing at least 30% of their art sales to Family Promise of Greater Lafayette, a not-for-profit organization that "provides shelter, food, transportation, and case management services to families that qualify for our program," according to its website.

“Family Promise was significantly impacted by the COVID pandemic," Rev. Tracey Leslie, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church and vice president of Family Promise’s board of directors, said in the release. "For health and safety, families were frequently required to quarantine in a hotel before moving into the shelter.

"Our volunteers were limited in the assistance they were able to provide, resulting in increased cost for food, staffing, and other support. It is Trinity's hope that our community will respond with generosity to support Family Promise and the difference they are making in the lives of homeless families in our area.”
