Chucky creator climbs into bed with original doll to spoof new Child's Play photo

Chucky creator Don Mancini spoofs new 'Child's Play' photo

On Thursday afternoon, EW published an exclusive image from the Child’s Play remake (above) which showed the new version of the killer doll Chucky looking over his sleeping owner Andy (Gabriel Bateman). Shortly afterward, director and Chucky creator Don Mancini tweeted an image of himself in bed with his arm around the original iteration of the toy, as featured in the original 1988 Child’s Play and its six sequels, including his last homicidal adventure, 2017’s Cult of Chucky.

Coincidence? We’re guessing not.

Mancini is not involved in the Child’s Play remake and is hardly a fan of the project. The filmmaker wrote the original script for the 1988 Child’s Play and the screenplays for all the sequels, the last three of which he directed. Mancini is currently developing a Chucky TV show for Syfy with Channel Zero executive producer Nick Antosca and is concerned about the possibility that the public might be confused by the presence of rival Chucky franchises.

Mancini and Chucky franchise actress Jennifer Tilly also have a history of responding on social media to developments with the Child’s Play remake. The day EW premiered the first look at the new Chucky, Mancini posted on Twitter a meme of Mariah Carey holding a sign which read “I don’t know her” along with the message “THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ON THAT SUBJECT.” (The meme was inspired by an interview Carey once gave on German TV in which she claimed to be unaware of the existence of pop rival Jennifer Lopez.) Tilly too used Twitter to greet the film’s first trailer. “New ‘Chucky’ movie?” Tilly wrote, alongside a photo of the actress with her doll character. “Ummm…no. Tiffany and I are gonna sit this one out.#NotmyChucky.”

The creators of the new movie, meanwhile, have been careful to acknowledge Mancini and the original movies. “Everyone is a huge fan of Don Mancini,” Child’s Play remake director Lars Klevberg told EW last year. “[If] he was making this movie with us it would be really amazing, but we understand he has his reasons. We are extremely grateful to him and will always be. He’s someone I look up to.”

The new Child’s Play stars Aubrey Plaza as a mother who gives her son, Andy (Gabriel Bateman), a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. Atlanta actor Brian Tyree Henry costars while Mark Hamill voices Chucky.
