Christopher Nolan's new movie 'Tenet' gets limited Labor Day weekend release
Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated thriller "Tenet," delayed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic, has a new limited Labor Day weekend release date.
The Warner Bros. film will open in select cities Sept. 3, while opening in 70 countries worldwide Aug. 26, the studio announced.
Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson has been delayed three times. It was originally planned for release July 17, then pushed back twice, to July 31 and Aug. 12, before it was delayed again July 20.
“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to re-evaluate our release dates," Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, told USA TODAY in a statement announcing the delay.
The studio also announced that “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” has been postponed to June 4, 2021. The latest film in the horror franchise was expected Sept. 11. Also delayed: "The Broken Hearts Gallery," the romantic comedy executive produced by Selena Gomez. The movie previously pushed back from July 17 to Aug. 7 and is now on hold.

The delay of "Tenet" comes as a disappointment to U.S. movie theater chains, many of which have used the film's release date as a reference point for their reopening plans. Walt Disney pulled "Mulan" off the release schedule July 23, Paramount moved "Top Gun: Maverick" from Dec. 23 to July 2, 2021.
Throughout the summer, many new films have shifted their release dates as COVID-19 cases rise. "Wonder Woman 1984," director Patty Jenkins' hotly anticipated superhero sequel starring Gal Gadot as the title Amazon warrior, has switched from Aug. 14 to Oct. 2, while "Bill & Ted Face the Music," the third installment of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter's time-traveling comedy series, has moved back its release two weeks to Aug. 28. And the Russell Crowe road-rage thriller 'Unhinged," which was supposed to open in theaters July 31, has been delayed to Aug. 21.
