Christopher Nolan and Peloton are on a bit of a break. The Oppenheimer director discussed his recent fitness activity at the 2024 Golden Globes after speaking out about a Peloton instructor who bashed his movie, Tenet, during a workout class.

“Nothing but love for Peloton,” Nolan said in the Globes’ press room when asked if he’d seen instructor Jenn Sherman’s response to his initial comments. “But I did not climb on it today. I might just skip it for a little while.”

Nolan’s Peloton saga first began during his speech at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last week. “I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. I’m dying,” he told the crowd. “The instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Has anyone else seen this? Because that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again.'”

Fans online quickly found the clip, pulled from a class led by Sherman that was recorded in 2020.

“This song is from a soundtrack of a movie called Tenet,” Sherman said in the class. “Anybody see this shit? Did anybody see this besides me? Because I need a manual. Someone’s got to explain this. Yeah, I’m not kidding, what the fuck was going on in that movie? Do you understand? Seriously, you need to be a neuroscientist to understand. And that’s two and a half hours of my life that I want back.”

Sherman responded to her own comments last week, saying in a video on Instagram that 2020 “was a dark time.”

“I may not have understood a minute of what the hell was going on in Tenet. That shit went right over my head. But I have seen Oppenheimer twice. And that’s six hours of my life that I don’t ever want to give back. So, Mr. Nolan, I’m inviting you to come take a ride with me in the Peloton Studio. You can critique my class. We’ll have a great time, you’ll sit in the front row and I promise you, it’ll be insult free.”

While it seems Nolan may not be taking Sherman up on her offer, she isn’t alone in her reverence for Nolan’s most recent film. Oppenheimer won big at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, taking home awards for best drama motion picture, best director, best score and best drama actor and supporting actor for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., respectively. Nolan’s and Murphy’s wins mark both men’s first Golden Globe trophies.

“I knew the first time I walked on a Chris Nolan set that it was different,” Murphy told the crowd when accepting his win. “I could tell by the level of rigor, the level of focus, the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors, that I was in the hands of a visionary director and master.”
