"Invisible Man" filmmaker Leigh Whannell will direct the creature feature.

There's a new wolf at the door.

Ryan Gosling is no longer set to star in the monster movie Wolf Man, and Girls alum Christopher Abbott will take his place. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions revealed the casting swap Wednesday while announcing that the werewolf thriller will hit theaters Oct. 25, 2024, just in time for Halloween.

Wolf Man had been expected to reunite Gosling with The Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, but will now be helmed by The Invisible Man filmmaker Leigh Whannell. Gosling remains on board as an executive producer.

Whannell previously circled Wolf Man back in 2020, hot off the success of the quarantine hit The Invisible Man, which starred Elisabeth Moss and updated its well-known source material into a thriller about gaslighting and domestic violence. Now Whannell will offer his take on another classic monster featured in several prior films, including 1941's The Wolf Man (starring Lon Chaney Jr.) and 2010's The Wolfman (starring Benicio Del Toro).

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the new Wolf Man will follow Abbott as "a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator." The script was written by Whannell, Corbett Tuck, and Dumb Money duo Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

Abbott is known for playing on-again, off-again boyfriend Charlie on Girls, and his other credits include Martha Marcy May Marlene and Catch-22. He can currently be seen opposite Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things.
