Christmas is coming fast. Start setting your concert schedule for the holiday week now
With Christmas Eve coming on Sunday night, it is a light weekend for music, but the next week is busy and we'll include some New Year's Eve options too. But first a little local color:
Hingham natives release Christmas video
Hingham natives Joanie and Lisa Pimentel, with their friend, drummer Nicola Berlinsky, are all teachers at the same Los Angeles area elementary school, and for several years they've also had a dual identity as No Small Children, a punk trio with Lisa on guitar and Joanie on bass. Boston-area rock fans remember Joanie as the frontwoman for the funk band SuperHoney, and she also sang with Flunky, Heidi, and Big Wig (which is three more bands). When the band Heidi was signed to Warner Brothers the sisters ended up in L.A., and when that record deal didn't produce massive success, they gravitated into teaching. Drama Dolls is an offshoot of No Small Children, with a cheeky but engaging holiday video, and the good news is that The C-Note in Hull has booked a Drama Dolls show, for August, when they'll be on a bill with The Harbormen, which includes Lisa and Joanie's brother from that musical Pimentel family.
THURSDAY, Dec. 21: G and the Willikers set to make their debut
South Shore blues and soul fans still mourn the breakup of Soul Box, but they'll be eager to hear the new project for former Soul Box singer George Howard, of Brockton, as "G and the Willikers" make their debut at The Fallout Shelter in Norwood. Boston songsmith Chad Perrone has an album release at City Winery's Haymarket Lounge; while the sweet vocal sounds of the Sons of Serendip are on the main stage at the Boston venue. Wintery Songs in Eleventy Part Harmony is that special sextet of female singers topped by Jennifer Kimball, at Club Passim in Harvard Square. Jen Kearney's funk and rock blend at The Burren in Somerville. Lee Ross sings at the Levitate Backyard in Marshfield. The Asian Project gets down at Big Night Live in Boston.
FRIDAY, Dec. 22: Blues double bill at The Fallout Shelter
One of the best double bills for modern blues anywhere comes to The Fallout Shelter in Norwood with guitar ace (and early Norah Jones advocate) Peter Parcek, with Danielle Miraglia. Hardest working man in showbiz Jay Psaros sings at the Levitate Backyard in Marshfield. The Spittin' Vinnies rock out at City Winery in Boston. Silk – an all R&B night – at Big Night Live in Boston. New England (via Detroit) blues legend James Montgomery and his band heat up The Mass. Arts Center in Mansfield.
SATURDAY, Dec. 23: Big Something coming to Pembroke
The best band out of Burlington, North Carolina, Big Something is a six-piece alt-rock/jamband colossus just off on a 40-city national tour to promote their seventh studio album, "Headspace," released last month, and their only Boston-area show is at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke. The Jay Psaros Band tops the fare at The C-Note's annual Christmas Party in Hull. Surfliner warms up the Levitate Backyard in Marshfield. DJ Linc headlines the holiday party at The Next Page Cafe in Weymouth.
