MONROE — A readers theater version of “A Christmas Carol” will be staged Dec. 15-17 at the Mall of Monroe, 2121 N. Monroe St., Ste. 400.

Members of Monroe Community Players will present Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale at 7 p.m. Dec. 15-16 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at its space at the mall. The community theater organization has presented “A Christmas Carol” for years. Tickets are $15 each and are available at monroecommunityplayers.org or at the door the night of the performances.

“’A Christmas Carol’ is Charles Dickens’ most popular work and one of the most often told stories of the season. This classic tale of redemption and the meaning of Christmas is arguably the most famous ghost story of all time,” director David Wahr said.

Some of the cast from Monroe Community Players’ readers theater offering “A Christmas Carol” are shown in a prevous year. The Players will stage the Christmas classic Dec. 15-17 this year.

Readers theater, also called “theater of the mind,” is a style of presentation which focuses on the words and the character and uses minimal props, costumes and action, the Players said.

“The imagination of the audience fills in the gaps, so each person’s experience is unique. This presentation will bring Dickens' story to life mostly in the original language. The script is based on a version of the story which Dickens himself presented in public appearances with a few surprises thrown in,” Wahr said.

Each member of the cast plays multiple roles. The cast includes: Nancy Dashner as Mrs. Cratchit; Jeff Finley as the Ghost of Christmas Present; Ralph Jordan as Scrooge’s nephew, Fred; Kathleen McBee as the Ghost of Christmas Past; Norb Nowak as Scrooge; Ronald Roberts as Jacob Marley; Brian Trippel as Bob Cratchit; and Robert Yoman as Old Joe.

“We have found over the past few years that our audiences enjoy our readers theater productions, and they really enjoy ‘A Christmas Carol,’” Wahr said. “We are very happy to be able to present this not-so-spooky ghost story once again.”
