Christina Applegate has made it clear on more than one occasion that she's not shy when it comes to detailing the personal—and often uncomfortable—consequences of her medical conditions, and the resulting illness caused by ingesting someone else's fecal matter is no exception.

The Dead to Me star opened up about the horrifying sickness she suffered through on her podcast MeSsy, where she and Jamie-Lynn Sigler get candid about their Multiple Sclerosis diagnoses. During the episode which aired April 23, the two offered transparent looks at the feelings of obligation they maintain, the importance of a support system, and other unfortunate necessities—like, sometimes, having to wear diapers.

Applegate revealed that at an unspecified but, assumedly, recent time, she spent several days "pissing out of [her] a--." She was "so dizzy" and unable to eat anything because of how ill she felt and, eventually, had to collect a sample for her doctors to test—which led to her throwing up because it was "so gross."

She tested positive for sapovirus, which is "when you ingest the fecal matter of someone else from your food,” as she explained, emphasizing, "Someone else’s poop went into my mouth, and I ate it.”

Sapovirus, according to the National Institutes of Health, is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, meaning a person can become infected when feces or vomit from an infected entity enters their body through their mouths, whether through contaminated food, drinking water, or directly. Sapovirus causes an infected individual to suffer "acute gastroenteritis," similar to norovirus.

At the time the two recorded the podcast, some of which happened in 2023, Applegate was on her third week of being sick after tracing her contamination back to a takeout salad from a restaurant she refused to name, but admitted to frequenting for years.

The 52-year-old has been largely confined to her home as a result, afraid she would have an accident in the car if she tried to go see her brother and his new baby, as planned after waking up in the middle of the night in "a pool" of excrement. Because of that, she started wearing diapers, but they're not always accessible for someone with MS as they can be difficult to get on and off.

She and Sigler also pointed out how unattractive the garments are, though they try to frill up the one for ladies with floral designs.

“Christina and I have talked about this. Putting on an adult diaper, you’re not gonna feel sexy,” Sigler, 42, said. “You’re never gonna slip one on and be like, ‘I’m ready for my day.’ It’s something you gotta wear because your body is malfunctioning.”
