Christian rapper TobyMac's son died of an accidental overdose

Christian rapper TobyMac‘s son died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl and amphetamines, Davidson County autopsy and toxicology results show.

Truett Foster McKeehan, the singer's 21-year-old son, died Oct. 23, 2019, in Nashville. McKeehan was found at a home in the 3000 block of Harlin Drive in the city's Radnor neighborhood about seven miles south of downtown.

An autopsy, conducted Oct. 24, 2019, by Davidson County Medical Examiner Feng Li, shows McKeehan died as a result of "acute combined drug intoxication." His manner of death was accidental.

In the report, Li said that McKeehan had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as possible nitrous oxide use. He was discovered unresponsive in bed by a friend conducting a welfare check on Oct. 23, 2019. Nitrous oxide is commonly known as laughing gas.

In addition to fentanyl, a toxicology report found McKeehan had adderall and marijuana in his system at the time of death.

Metro Nashville police did not initially disclose a suspected cause of death.

An aspiring rapper, McKeehan penned songs under the pseudonyms TRU, Moxie and as truDog.

On the day he died, the Nashville Fire Department responded during the late morning hours to a report of a person in cardiac arrest at the home. McKeehan was pronounced dead on arrival.

TobyMac, known also as Kevin Michael McKeehan, postponed the remaining dates of a week-long Canadian tour to return home to his wife and other children in Franklin, Tennessee.

In a statement made soon after the death, TobyMac said his son "had joy that took the room when he entered."

"He was a magnetic son and brother and friend. If you met him you knew him, you remembered him. His smile, his laugh, the encouragement he offered with words or even without. He had an untamable grand personality and dreams to match."

In honor of McKeehan, TobyMac and his family launched the Truett Foster Foundation — an organization raising college scholarship funds for underserved youth.

Earlier this month, TobyMac released "21 Years" Friday, a new song grappling with the unexpected death of his oldest son.

In releasing "21 Years," TobyMac shared a note detailing grief that followed his son's death. The song provides "an honest confession of the questions, pain, anger, doubt, mercy and promise that describes the journey I’m probably only beginning," he said.
