Divorces can be traumatic, but it seems that Chrishell Stause of Selling Sunset has learned some valuable lessons from hers.

Two years after finalizing her divorce from Justin Hartley in 2021, Stause, 42, took to SoFi’s Richer Lives podcast alongside Vivian Tu (also known as YourRichBFF on TikTok) and host Brian Walsh on Tuesday to discuss lessons learned from her first marriage and life planning with her new life partner, Australian musician, G Flip, 29.

In response to a question from Walsh about the appropriate time to combine finances with a partner, Stause stresses the importance of always having some level of independence.

“Personally, I think that you should always keep some independence in a relationship because… you never know,” she says, seemingly alluding to her previous marriage with Hartley. “So as someone that speaks from experience, I say, always keep some independence. But when it comes to down the line and raising children, I'm sure that conversation will change.”

Hartley, 46, filed for divorce in November 2019 divorce. A source told PEOPLE at the time, Chrishell was "really ready to just settle down and be a wife and stay-at-home mom and was hoping to start a family relatively soon" while Justin "doesn’t think it has to happen in the near future" and was focused on his career. Hartley reportedly ended their two-year marriage over text.

Stause’s new life with G Flip, with whom she had a wedding in Las Vegas last spring, is filled with happiness and healthy communication, she says.

"We’re just very open and transparent about everything,” she tells Tu and Walsh, in response to a question about tackling shared goals. “We're trying to combine our lives and talk about family planning, and that is something that is a shared goal of ours.”

She says that starting a family as a same-sex couple is more involved, but they agree that it’s a worthwhile financial commitment.

“There's a lot more planning involved . . . and that's a financial [decision],” she continues. “It's a luxury that I feel really lucky to be able to do. It's not cheap, whether you're in a same-sex relationship or whether you are in a relationship where you're not able to get pregnant naturally,” she says. “There are alternatives, but they're pricey.”

Family planning aside, Stause and G Flip are figuring out how to combine all of their possessions and interests into their home.

“One of our shared goals is just working that out, and trying to figure out how we get our lives to combine. G has a studio in L.A., but it's not like I have a space in my house. [We] are trying to figure all this out,” she explains. “I think that you should have those conversations, even if they're uncomfortable."

Stause confirmed her relationship with G Flip in May 2022, though the pair didn't announce an engagement before their wedding a year later.

She told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview following the big day, "It was a very small group there with us and some friends and family watching on a live stream," Very few in their circle were notified in advance that they would be tying the knot.

Stause announced the relationship during a Selling Sunset reunion episode. "I recently have been spending a lot of time with someone that's very important to me. Their name is G Flip. They're non-binary, so they go by they/them. And they are an extremely talented musician,” she said.

"It started because I was just going to be in their video. And it's about this chaotic love story,” she continued. “I come from soaps, I love acting. And with the job that we have, I don't always get to do it. At first of course I was like yes, let's do that."
