Watch: Chris Pratt shares a surprising career confession

As The Garfield Movie purrs into cinemas, Chris Pratt — the voice of the world’s laziest cat — has hinted at a possible career change: "It would be great to do nothing but voice acting."

With famous voice roles in The Lego Movie, Onward, and and The Super Mario Bros Movie already under his belt, he’s thrilled to be taking on the challenge of pop culture's most famous feline.

Talking to Yahoo UK, he explained, “It’s the opportunity to breathe my voice and spirit into an iconic character. Garfield’s perhaps the most widely circulated comic strip character of all time.”

And, with voice acting roles attracting big names, as well as offering a better life/work balance, the Parks and Recreation alum is keen to do more. “It’s a really fantastic way to work. I’m thrilled with it,” he says. “Big names are being cast, so I think people are being drawn to these movies. They’re just like any leading role in a film. They’re coveted and sought after.

"Not having to go through hair and make-up, go into a little sound studio, throw on some headphones and do some work for four hours is really nice," he added.

"As is doing roles that my children will be able to watch sooner rather than later. They’re young, but they could watch a movie like Garfield because it’s safe for all ages."

In The Garfield Movie, Garfield charms his way into the life of the long-suffering Jon (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) as a furry little kitten and gets his appetite for lasagna and pizza. Then, fully grown and settled into his lazy ways, he’s re-united with his long-lost father, street cat Vic (the voice of Samuel L Jackson) and, instead of chilling on the sofa, has to join his dad in a high-stakes heist.

The voices of Ving Rhames, plus Ted Lasso duo Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein, are also in the cast.

It's twenty years since Garfield made his first on-screen appearance in Garfield: The Movie. The world’s most famous lasagna lover was voiced by Bill Murray and a sequel, Garfield: A Tail Of Two Kitties, followed two years later. Both films were mainly live action, but this new version is full-on animation.

Currently filming sci fi thriller Mercy with Rebecca Ferguson and True Detective’s Kali Reis — a collision with a metal post just four days into the shoot left him with a badly bruised and swollen ankle — the Guardians Of The Galaxy and Jurassic World star is due back on screens later this year in The Electric State, re-uniting him with Anthony and Joe Russo who directed him in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers:Endgame (2019).

The Netflix production also stars Millie Bobby Brown, Ke Huy Quan and Stanley Tucci.

The Garfield Movie is in UK cinemas from 24 May.
