“Do [your kids] think you’re cool?” DeGeneres asked the musician. “My daughter works at a clothing store, this is her first job, actually. She’s about to be 16 and I’m so proud of her,” Martin gushed. “She’s, you know, making her way in the world.”

Like most proud papas, Martin wanted to see his daughter at work firsthand. “I went to surprise her…not to surprise her, I went to see,” he shared. “And I thought ‘I better buy something’, so I took a T-shirt from the rack and I lined up in the queue. She was at the checkout.”

As a parent, I find this terribly sweet But let’s be real: If I imagine myself as a teen, I can pretty easily understand how Apple probably felt about the surprise visit. Because no matter how famous he may be, he is still…well, her dad.

When Apple caught sight of her dad, she did what most teenagers would do in this situation: She frantically mouthed “Dad! Get out!” in her father’s direction. “I felt terrible and I moved to the other line,” Martin shared. “I paid for the T-shirt and I’d bought her some fudge…so I said to [her co-worker] ‘can you just give this to my daughter?’ And as I was leaving she shouted ‘I love you, Dad!'”

So, so sweet…and we’ll say it just one more time, relatable.
