YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Word out of the New York City celebrity property gossip columns is that up and coming actor Chris Lowell sold his duplex bachelor pad in Greenwich Village for $1.05 million and, with also up and coming actress girlfriend Kerry Bishé, swooped in on a lofty triplex maisonette in a boutique co-operative apartment house in Soho purchased per property records by the unmarried but presumably cohabitating couple in December 2015 for $2.15 million.
Affably handsome thirty-something year old Mister Lowell’s break out role came in the mid-Aughts on the semi-cult-status teen noir “Veronica Mars.” He subsequently appeared on the first three seasons of “Private Practice” during which time he concurrently popped up on the silver screen in a couple of Best Picture Oscar nominees, first “Up In The Air” in 2009 and then “The Help” in 2011. He is slated to star as the titular character in the upcoming cable comedy series “Graves.” As for wholesomely pretty and usually but not always blond Miss Bishé, born in New Zealand and raised in New Jersey, she landed on the showbiz radar in 2009 when she turned up to replace Zach Braff as the lead character and narrator on the final season of “Scrubs.” Several small movie role s followed before she scored a plummy supporting role in the three-time Oscar-winning film “Argo” (2012) and she currently co-stars in the AMC series “Halt and Catch Fire,” a well-regarded period drama this property gossip has, quite frankly, neither seen nor heard of before.
Mister Lowell’s airy two-story bachelor pad, purchased February 2012 for $810,000 and located on the third floor of a classic 19th-century cast iron building, features a closet-sized galley kitchen off the long entrance gallery and a combination living/dining room with 16-foot ceilings, gigantic east-facing windows, and a working fireplace set against an exposed brick wall. Next to and completely open to the living/dining room, an office/den has a full wall of closets and, hence, could quickly and inexpensively be closed off to create a proper second bedroom. A steep, almost ladder-like staircase that does clever double-duty as bookshelves leads to a full-height sleeping loft that overlooks the living room and includes an enviably commodious walk-in closet. What the bedroom does not have is convenient access to the apartment’s lone bathroom, a compact, windowless situation just inside the front door on the lower level.
The triplex that Mister Lowell and Miss Bishé purchased together is located along a busy thoroughfare in a well-tended 19th century red brick edifice that once served as a police precinct and offers two bedrooms and two bathrooms in 1,292-square feet. The main entrance, located on the triple-stacked apartment’s middle floor, opens directly into an open plan living/dining/kitchen area with five high, narrow and deep-set arched windows lined up along an exposed brick wall. The ceiling in the slightly tight living area soars to 20-ish-feet, according to marketing materials, and a massive skylight helps to harness ambient natural light in the otherwise natural light-challenged apartment. Bespoke built-in banquette seating in the dining space incorporates a desk area and the small but efficiently arranged kitchen has honed granite counter tops and full-sized high-grade stainless steel appliances. An open-tread switchback staircase climbs to a tiny landing vestibule between the sky-lit master bathroom and the master bedroom itself, which is contained in a rhythmically wood-slatted volume cantilevered over the kitchen and dining area and has a frosted glass window that can be slid open to overlook the living room. The lowest level offers laundry facilities, custom storage closet, large bedroom, small hall bathroom, and a generous mudroom smartly and conveniently lined with open, floor-to-ceiling storage cubbies. The mudroom not only has a secondary access to the building’s public areas it opens to a small, below-street-level courtyard that is, listing details reveal, is only “semi-private,” thus unfortunately shared by at least one other apartment.
