Chris Kattan Dishes on Wedding Plans After Upgrading Elopement to a 'Medium-Sized Ceremony' (Exclusive)

The 'Saturday Night Live' alum is engaged to Maria Libri

Chris Kattan and fiancée Maria Libri are sharing details about their upcoming wedding.

While attending U2's new Las Vegas residency at The Sphere on Friday night, the Saturday Night Live alum, 52, and his soon-to-be bride chatted exclusively with PEOPLE about their nuptials, which they said were originally meant to be an elopement.

“It started off as let's elope, and now it's a medium-sized ceremony,” Libri said, as Kattan explained, “That was her idea. That's romantic. That means you want to commit.”

The duo now plan to exchange “I dos” next summer in Chicago, which is where they live and where they got engaged. “My dad was born there, and his ashes were spread there,” Kattan said. 

And while they’re still working out the specific details of their wedding, the comedian noted that he’s going to flip through his contacts to find a wedding singer. “We might have a friend, a guest musician, play,” he explained. “We have a couple in mind that might do a favor, hopefully.”

Kattan and Libri got engaged in March when the actor proposed at a Wilco concert in Chicago.

"Maria and I fully accept each other for who we are," Kattan exclusively told PEOPLE at the time. "It's not just the things we have in common, we also embrace our quirks and differences — and we don't love each other in spite of them, we love each other because of them."

"When I got to see her and spend time together a few months after we first met, and I realized our creative brains were also totally in sync (after the first sketch we did together), that's when I knew I was in trouble!" he continued. "Thankfully for me, she felt the same way."

Libri, meanwhile, recalled how the pair shared an immediate connection after she interviewed Kattan in Springfield, Illinois, while he was on tour for a comedy show over a year and a half ago.

"It's funny how life works sometimes and gives you gifts when you're not looking for them," said the former journalist, who is now a screenwriter and actor. "When we met, we were immediately comfortable with one another. Call it weird, mystical or magical, it's like we'd known each other in a past life. After spending that first day together (though I didn't know how), I just somehow knew that my life would never be the same after meeting Chris."
