Chris was sitting with his bass player Duff McKagan in a bar in Nashville when he spotted Kelly. He recalled saying, "'I’m going to marry her,' " to which McKagan quipped, "'Yep, probably not.' "

He learned she worked at a record label in the city and made an attempt to pitch songs to her.

“I thought he was the best thing I’d ever seen,” Kelly told The Tennessean in 2018.

After that, Chris invited her to his cabin “under the guise of co-writing, and they sat on his porch swing and fell in love.”

Kelly is also a songwriter and music publisher, and she writes alongside Chris.

"Some of our first dates were writes," Kelly told The Boot. "He invited me up to his cabin to write songs. And we ended up getting married! So that's how we fell in love, is over music, honestly."

Chris admitted that although they "didn't write anything" during their first few sessions, Kelly said they "were writing a love story."

The “Buy Me a Boat" vocalist added, "It's a great honor to work together. It really is. It's rare and probably wouldn't work for most people, but it works for us."

Kelly is not only Chris’s wife — she’s also his manager.

"I've had other people come to me and ask me if I would manage them," Kelly told PEOPLE in 2019. "The answer is no. I only will do it for my husband because I truly believe in his talent so much. I'll do whatever I can to show the world that he's a superstar."

As his manager, Kelly rearranged his travel from utilizing a tour bus to chartered turboprop planes for easier and faster travel.

"If people want to see Chris and they send the offers and I can logistically make it happen," she said. "We're going to go."

Kelly elaborated to The Boot that "it just works" because "he's very creative" and she takes care of the rest.

"As long as I can get him to the show and show him where it is and tell him what time. He does the rest," she said. "I always know that once he steps onstage, it's gonna win, no matter where we are."

The couple were able to escape a house fire that erupted in their home just south of Nashville in 2021.

Janson told PEOPLE, "I went into survival mode. ... God woke up my wife Kelly. ... This was a legit, '7-foot flame, taller than me' fire. It was a 'melting my ceiling fan onto my ottoman' fire."

Kelly and their children evacuated safely as he called 911 and tried to put the fire out himself in the meantime. The fire caused significant damage, and the family was "gutting the whole bottom" of their much-loved house.

"I'm just grateful to be alive," Janson said. "I'm grateful that the house didn't burn down."
