Chris Evans says rumored 'Avengers' reunion is ‘news to me’

“No one’s spoken to me about it,” the "Captain America" star said about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans have long speculated that Marvel will eventually reassemble the original Avengers lineup, including Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson — but Chris Evans says he hasn’t heard any concrete plans.

In an appearance on The View on Monday, the Pain Hustlers actor shut down rumors that he may return to Captain America in the near future. “You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans said. “I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and [Chris] Hemsworth, and Scarlett, and everyone’s coming back!”

Though he didn’t rule out an eventual return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans said there are no immediate plans for a reunion with his Avengers costars, and that it would take a very particular set of circumstances for him to play Steve Rogers again. “No one’s spoken to me about it,” he said. “And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Evans played Captain America as a leading role in seven movies between 2011 and 2019 — four Avengers projects and three Captain America films — plus a handful of cameos in movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: The Dark World. He’s previously played Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, in Tim Story’s Fantastic Four films.

Steve Rogers’ arc came to a close with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which saw him travel through time to reunite with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and emerge in the present day as an elderly man. Steve passed the mantle of Captain America on to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who grappled with the hero’s legacy in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and will suit up in red, white, and blue in Captain America: Brave New World, set to release in 2025.

Since his time with Marvel concluded, Evans has turned his focus primarily to streaming projects, including The Gray Man and Pain Hustlers on Netflix and Ghosted and Defending Jacob on Apple TV+. He also lent his voice to Pixar’s Lightyear last year, and recently reprised the role of Lucas Lee in Netflix’s animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Evans is next slated to appear in Red One, a Christmas action film starring Dwayne Johnson from Amazon MGM Studios.
