Captain America might actually be coming out of retirement, despite what we saw at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
Surprising to Marvel fans, Chris Evans is in talks to return as super-soldier Steve Rogers in some capacity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to a new report. Deadline states it's likely Evans will appear in a way similar to how Robert Downey Jr. appeared in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, as opposed to starring in a new Cap movie.
The actor took to Twitter a few hours after the report broke with a three-word response. "News to me," he tweeted. This wouldn't be the first time an actor in a superhero movie cast doubt to dissuade the public regarding casting rumors. Tatiana Maslany told a publication she wasn't going to be cast in the She-Hulk Disney+ series as the title character, and then Disney made it official weeks later. But this certainly casts doubt on the situation.
Marvel declined to comment. A rep for Evans did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

Evans had been vocal about hanging up his shield after fulfilling his duties as Captain America during the first three phases of the MCU. In Endgame, after taking down Thanos, Steve was seen using the quantum realm portal to redo his life so he could spend it with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). He returned as an old man to officially gift Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) his signature shield to pass the torch.
The actor followed up his slew of Marvel movies with roles in Knives Out and Apple TV+'s Defending Jacob series. He's currently filming director Adam McKay's star-studded Don't Look Up and he'll appear opposite Ryan Gosling in the Netflix action movie The Gray Man. Evans was also tapped to voice the astronaut that inspired Buzz Lightyear in Pixar's upcoming Lightyear.

With Marvel Studios expanding its on-screen superhero world with a slew of Disney+ series, kicking off this week with WandaVision, there seem to be a number of different ways Captain America could return. Multiverse? Well, there is the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sequel. Some time displacement? The Loki series seems to suggest that's possible. Could an elderly Steve start fighting bad guys again in his old age? Who can say?
