Chris Evans' Knives Out sweater, Jojo Rabbit win Costume Designers Guild Awards
The 2020 Costume Designers Guild Awards have sewn a gilded thread into the awards season fabric.
Top honors at the industry guild’s annual awards ceremony — hosted by Mindy Kaling Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles — went to three popular films across its three main competitive categories. Mayes C. Rubeo’s Jojo Rabbit designs won in the Period Film category, while Jenny Egan’s Knives Out creations (hello, Chris Evans’ sweater!) triumphed in Contemporary Film and Ellen Mirojnick’s garments for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil earned the Sci-Fi/Fantasy award.
This year’s film winners will likely have little influence on the Oscar race, however, as only two of 15 overall CDGA nominees — Jojo Rabbit and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which competed against each other in the same CDGA category — received corresponding Oscar nominations. Despite sitting the CDGA show out, Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson (The Irishman), Mark Bridges (Joker), and Jacqueline Durran (Little Women) showed up among the Oscar nominees.
On the television side, Schitt’s Creek, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Game of Thrones took top honors.
Comprised of more than 1,100 costume designers and illustrators working across film, TV, commercials, music videos, and new media programs, the CDG celebrated its 22nd anniversary as a major awards body with this year’s ceremony, which also honored Bombshell actress Charlize Theron with its Spotlight Award for a career committed to excellence in costumes.
