As Aerosmith get ready to embark on a farewell tour, it’s no secret that guitarist Joe Perry and singer Steven Tyler have had their share of discord over the years. Such was the case around 2009, when Perry was seeking out a potential replacement for the band’s iconic vocalist.

In a new interview with The Dave Rickards Podcast, singer Chris Daughtry revealed that he was one of the candidates that Perry approached to take over for Tyler, who at the time entered rehab for painkillers and then emerged to become a judge on American Idol.

Frustrated with the lack of Aerosmith activity, Perry sought out possible replacements for Tyler. Over the years, it has been reported that Perry may have reached out to such singers as Sammy Hagar, Chris Cornell, Paul Rodgers, and Billy Idol.

Daughtry at the time was a few years removed from his fourth-place finish on the fifth season of American Idol, and enjoying success with his eponymous band. He was a hot commodity, but his respect and admiration for Tyler led to him declining the once-in-a-lifetime offer.

“I get this random call from Joe Perry — Joe Perry and Steven were apparently at odds with each other,” Daughtry said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “It was all in the news … I think it was like a public breakup sort of thing. Joe Perry calls me. … I thought it was a joke at first, but he didn’t even take time to, like, ‘How’re you doing?’ He just went into his reason for calling me. … ‘How would you feel about hitting the road with us? You’ve got some cool songs we could play too.'”

He continued, “I was speechless. First of all, I don’t consider myself any caliber of singer that Steven Tyler is as far as I would not be able to tackle those songs the way Steven Tyler tackles him. He is irreplaceable, in my mind. Furthermore, Steven Tyler’s alive. This whole fear of pissing off one of my heroes was just looming, and I was, like, ‘There’s no way I can do this, Joe.'”

Daughtry called the idea of singing for Aerosmith “a terrifying concept,” but admitted that Perry’s phone call is a story he will “hold near and dear” for the rest of his life.

As it turns out, Aerosmith never hired a replacement singer. The band’s farewell tour kicks off September 2nd in Philadelphia, with tickets available here.

Daughtry, meanwhile, is in the midst of his band’s “Bare Bones” acoustic US tour. Tickets for his outing are available here.

While he may be modest, Daughtry proved he can sing Aerosmith while performing a cover of “Dream On” with alt-rockers Train in 2014. Check out footage of that gig, as well as the full podcast interview in which he discussed the Aerosmith offer, below.
