What Chris Cuomo regrets about his whole ordeal: 'I didn’t think about it at the time'

On Dan Abrams Live on NewsNation Tuesday, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo joined the show for his first televised interview since his firing late last year. Cuomo got caught up in his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s, mounting scandals. He was also accused of sexual assault, an accusation Cuomo has denied. He expressed regret at the impact the situation has had on his family.

“You don’t grow up the way I did, and do this many years in this ugly business, and not get a skin. You know, a real hide,” Cuomo said. “But your kids, your loved ones, they have to wear that badge as well.” He later added, “I never wanted to be in politics, but — I want to let my kids be their own people. And then, here I am. And there’s regret that goes along with that.”

Though Cuomo has said he’ll never regret trying to help his brother, he laments the fact that he never considered the effect it could have on his wife and kids.

“While I thought that I’m doing this for my family, that’s why I did it,” Cuomo said, “but what did I expose my kids to? My wife? The people in my life? I didn’t think about it at the time. I just thought it was the right thing to do, so I did it.”

CHRIS CUOMO: I never wanted to be in politics. But I want to let my kids be their own people. And then here I am. And there's regret that goes along with that.

KYLIE MAR: Former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo joined "Dan Abrams Live" on NewsNation Tuesday, where he spoke about the effect his recent hardships have had on his family. Cuomo was fired from CNN late last year for his involvement in his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's, mounting scandals. It was later reported that a sexual assault accusation also contributed to his firing-- an accusation Cuomo has denied.

CHRIS CUOMO: You don't grow up the way I did and do this many years in this ugly business and not get a skin-- a real hide. But your kids, your loved ones-- they have to wear that badge as well.

KYLIE MAR: Cuomo has said on multiple occasions that he does not regret trying to help his brother. But he does regret not thinking about the impact it would have on his wife and kids.

CHRIS CUOMO: Well, I thought that I'm doing this for my family. That's why I did it. But what did I expose my kids to-- my wife, the people in my life? I didn't think about it at the time. I just thought it was the right thing to do. So I did it.

KYLIE MAR: And as Cuomo prepares to jump back into public life with his new podcast and a prime time show on NewsNation this fall, he now has a new perspective on what that means.

CHRIS CUOMO: When you're in public life, it's not just about you. We lie to ourselves and tell ourselves that. It's not. Your kids are going to have to live with what you do. And I've given that a lot of thought.
