Chris Christie shoots tequila, blames Donald Trump for the shutdown during 'Colbert' interview

Chris Christie visited The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night, where he discussed the recent government shutdown over lack of funding for President Trump’s border wall. While Christie maintains that he and Trump have been friends for 17 years, he didn’t hold back when it came to criticizing the president.

Christie started the interview by taking a large shot of tequila. The former New Jersey governor soon after declared, “The president blew it.”

“When?” Colbert asked.

“When he shut the government down with no plan on how to reopen it,” Christie responded.

On Friday, Trump agreed to a three-week spending package that allowed the government to reopen after the longest shutdown in American history — a shutdown that Christie didn’t think was well-thought-out.

“I don’t think, given that it went 35 days, we had a plan,” he said, adding that by not securing the $5.7 billion in wall funding, Trump lost. Or, as Christie explained, “In politics we call that ‘getting rolled.’”

And when Colbert asked, “Would you have been a better president than Trump?” the longtime friend of Trump immediately said “yes.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
