GRAND RAPIDS — A local pet supply shop is collecting donations to benefit Harbor Humane Society.

Throughout the month of January, pet owners can bring cardboard boxes from pet supplies shipped by any national competitor, including Amazon and Chewy, to their neighborhood Chow Hound.

The boxes will be shredded and donated to Harbor Humane Society in West Olive, where the shavings can provide healthy, dust-free bedding for small animals.

Anyone who brings in a box for recycling will receive a coupon for free home delivery from Chow Hound. The company hopes to promote the advantages of same-day local delivery while keeping cardboard out of landfills.

“To strengthen our local communities, we are highlighting ways to support local rescue and adoption and local businesses as well,” said CEO Brannon Dixon. “Chow Hound can provide the same products that the online competitors do in half the time — without the abundance of cardboard — from a neighborhood business.

"With us, you can still get all the convenience of online shopping, but also support a local business with pet experts in-store who can assist with questions or concerns.”

Cardboard shavings are ideal for pet bedding, as they are highly odor absorbent, non-toxic and eco-conscious.
